Why do you write for kids?
I am a teacher first, and a writer second. After more than 20 years in a classroom, I still am trying to find a way to ‘hook’ children on learning. If I can start that fire burning in them, they can fan those flames and turn them into something really special as they get older. Younger children are, in many ways, the best learners. We teachers sometimes find ways to dim their excitement for learning and that makes me sad. I want to unlock that sense of wonder, of amazement that young children naturally have and to reassure them that it’s more than ok to love learning – it’s awesome!
